Wanting to understand what your target audience is talking about or interested in, but have no clue where to start? Well lucky for you, I have a few tips and tricks up my sleeve to point you in the right direction!
Today I'll be giving you a crash course in the best ways to find out your current target audience's conversation, and effective ways to communicate with them on online and social platforms.
Step 1: What Is Your Brand's Current Image/Associations

By either doing a google search or asking friends or family, find out what people associate your brand with. Do people think you provide athletic wear or fashionable clothing, casual or fine dining, trendy or classic design? Knowing where people are currently categorizing your business helps in understanding where disconnects may be occurring, and help in identifying new avenues to start and continue the conversation for your brand.
Step 2: Identify Current Interest Within Your Target Audience

Sometimes its easy to think you know your audience, but when digging a little deeper you can find insights that completely change the way you're conversing with them. For example, if your target audience is 18 to 25 year old females who live in metropolitan areas, you might be lead to believe that their interests surround fashion and friends. However, upon digging deeper in what your audience is talking about, you might find they have interests in environmental activism or personal health and fitness. Don't hesitate to dive into social media platforms and look at postings within your demographic audience. Knowing trending topics, inside jokes, or the most shocking updates can really give your brand edge when interacting with your target audience.
Step 3: Finding Their Current Interests

A great way to find what topics your current audience is talking about is to identify what platform your audience is speaking on and to look at current social influencers on these platforms. An easy way to go about finding these individuals for your brand would be to google search a topic such as "environmental activist" on a specific platform: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc. The entire search should look something like this "environmental activist on Twitter". Once you have your search, look at influencers that mimic the audience you want to attract, and see what types of news, updates, deals, and conversation they are having with their followers. These individuals can give key insights into jargon, tone, and media that your target audience enjoys engaging with, so take a few notes from the pros!
Step 4: Practice Better Posting

Do a little copy testing of your own, and try posting new content that uses the insights you have found. If you saw that your target audience enjoys gifs over photos, take a chance in using a gif in your next posts. If the social influencer you looked at used specific hashtags in their postings, try including those hashtags in your next post and see if you garner a larger audience! It never hurts to try new things, and that could lead to more engagement with your brand.
Communicating with your intended audience may sometimes appear to be a confusing process, but trust me. Once you dig a little deeper, the insights you find can have transformational effects on the growth and engagement from your target audience with your brand.
