In our day to day grind, it's sometimes hard to find time for the little things in life, like growing a small plant for your windowsill. Well fear not my busy companions, I can help you find time for the little things! With the help of my horticulture specialist and brother, Tyler Hollomon, I will teach you how to grow your very own plant in 10 easy steps. Equipping you with the knowledge and understanding of how to blossom your very own flower, herb, or vegetable!
To begin lets see what we need for materials:
1) The seeds you want to grow
2) 1 gallon pot or red solo cup (With holes in the bottom!)
3) 1 bag of potting soil
4) Paper Towels
5) Ziplock Bag
6) Water
7) Purelite fertilizer (Not necessary but great if you have)
Once we have all of our materials lets get to work!
Step 1 : Germination Preparation
We want to germinate the seeds in order to prepare them for the potting process. For this we will need our seeds and paper towels!
-Wet your paper towel and place 5 or 6 seeds in the middle.
- Fold the paper towel long ways 4 to 5 times, encasing the seeds.
Step 2: Germination
Look to the back portion of your seed packet and find the germination period (this is typically 7 to 10 days depending on your plant).
- Once we know the germination period we can place the seeds into the Ziploc bag, seal it, and put the Ziploc bag on the widow seal for the recommended amount of days.
Step 3: Prepare for Potting
Once we have waited the recommended amount of days, lets look at our seedlings! Hopefully yours have sprouted a small whitish root like the one below. If not, do not fear, just neatly fold your paper towel again, and place the seedlings back on the windowsill to germinate longer.
If your seedlings have sprouted a root great, we can begin potting!
For potting preparation you'll need
- Gallon pot/red solo cup (with holes poked in the bottom)
- Potting soil
- Water
- Purelite Fertilizer (If you have it)
Great now we have all the materials we need to grow something beautiful!
Step 4: Pouring The Soil
-Lets begin by making sure our pot has holes in the bottom. This is very important because without the holes the plant does not have drainage and could possibly drown!
- Now fill your solo cup or pot to the first rim on the inside. (see picture below for more detail)
- After filling the pot with soil, place the Purelight fertilizer on the top if you have it.
-Mix the fertilizer with the soil, until fertilizer is even throughout.
- Pour small amount of water on the soil to dampen it for the seedling!
Step 5: Potting Your Seedling
Its the finish line, lets plant our seedling!
- First make a hole 1/2 to 1 inch deep x 1/2 inch wide .
- Carefully place your seedling in the hole, laying it down sideways.
-Cover the hole with dirt, no extra dirt on the top, only enough to cover the seedling.
- Finally place your newly potted plant on a windowsill that gets good light, and watch it grow!
It's been great helping you in the process of potting your own plant! Within the next few weeks you should be mindful of the amount of water you're giving your plant not to over water, or forget to water it! I know you will all do great in this process, and can grow beautiful and amazing flowers, spices, and vegetables right on your windowsill!
